Dear Subscriber,

Our recent Gawler Ranges trip completes what has been a relatively busy year for us.
We have visited many usual destinations, and added "Legendary Longreach" to the list, a trip which certainly provides contrast in terms of interest, scenery, history and terrain.

Our 2016 departure dates have now been set and are listed at the foot of this newsletter.

I thank you for your interest in Desert Sky Tours!
Stay safe and catch you next time!

Gluepot Reserve 20 years Celebrations

Purchased in July 1997, BirdLife Australia Gluepot Reserve is Australia's largest community managed and operated conservation reserve. Situated 64 km from the River Murray in South Australia's Riverland, the reserve is managed and operated entirely by volunteers.

Some 54,000 ha is size, the Reserve is home to 18 nationally threatened species of birds, 53 species of reptiles and 12 species of bats, some of which are nationally threatened. There are few areas of the world that support such a concentration of threatened species.

In October/November 2017, Gluepot will celebrate its' first 20 years as one of the worlds leading community conservation reserves and an integral part of these celebrations will be the compilation and production of a quality "GLUEPOT COUNTRY COOKING" cookbook.

Now, Gluepot Reserve is calling for recipes which could be included in the book, and a list of suggested headings
So ladies - if you have a favourite recipe, Margaret or Anne would be delighted to hear from you!

Holowiliena  Station
If you missed the recent ABC "Restoration Australia"  feature about Holowiliena Station and the authentic restoration work that has been completed there, you can read an article which featured in the Adelaide Advertiser earlier this year.
Richard and Jan Warwick run Holowiliena, the  oldest leasehold property in South Australia that still retains the same family name as the original. (Others are in the same family, but under different names).

The article makes very interesting reading.
Burke and Wills - History

President of the Burke and Wills Historical Society, Dave Phoenix, has written an article concerning Burke's Tranter revolver which was purchased by the Burke Museum at Beechworth Vic.

The article which can be viewed here, also includes a number of photographs.

Extreme Weather

Diana referred me to a book 'South Australia's extreme weather'  by Tony Rogers, in which he mentions on 19/8/1895 Farina had snow.!!!

On 27/7/1901 there was snow from Mt Gambier to Yardea and Kimba and Burra, and further events in 1905 with snow on Broken Hill, Flinders Ranges, Orroroo, and Blinman.

The book is available in many Public Libraries.
